Nine Dalit Christian families, eight of them from Alappuzha district, were on Sunday “reconverted” to Hinduism by the Vishva Hindu Parishad as part of its “ghar wapsi” campaign.
In Alappuzha, the 30 Christians who embraced Hinduism belong to eight families from Kanichanaloor village. The ritual was held at a local temple under guidance of VHP district secretary Prathap G. At Anchal in Kollam, a family of three “returned” to Hinduism.
While Prathap asserted the “reconversion” was not forced, the Congress-led government ordered a probe into the incidents. State Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said ADGP (Intelligence) A Hemachandran would investigate the matter, but, the police noted they have yet to receive a complaint in this regard.
“More families would be returning to Hinduism in the coming days. We won’t let them down. Although Christians treated them as second rated faithful, Hinduism would offer them due respect,” the VHP leader said.
The VHP in the state has launched a helpline offering support for those who want to embrace Hinduism. Sources said they have already received around 200 queries from across Kerala and “ghar wapsi” would be held in all districts on December 25.
BJP Kerala spokesman V V Rajesh said the party was not directly involved in the campaign, but would welcome anyone who wants to return to Hinduism.
“Several Hindus had left the religion on account of the inhumane treatment they got. They were taken to Christianity under the influence of foreign money.
Hence, many are willing to return to Hinduism,’’ he said. In Kerala, Christians form 19 per cent of the total population.
